Artist Residency Programs are platforms that provide work and career opportunities to artists, academics and curators from many different parts of the world. Any field that offers space and time to creativity can transform itself into a Residency Program. Residents participating in these programs, which create an environment for artistic and cultural exchange, have the opportunity to travel and experience different cultures, ways of thinking, and life. At the same time, short- or long-term interactions that occur during these programs in guesthouses and studio visits enable interdisciplinary dialogue. New collaborations arising from international and local relations gather local artists and art professionals under the same roof, which offers unlimited discussion opportunities.
Beyond providing a production space, residency programs offer their participants a space where they can freely experiment in different areas. By hosting more than one guest at the same time, guest programs create great opportunities for participants to meet new people and share their creation processes as well as open new doors in their research as a result of this sharing. In this way, a continuous feedback system is established and artists refine their production practices by learning new techniques. By the end of the Residency Program, participants have improved their networks of communication from having gained visibility in a different medium.
As Gate 27, we see the Artist Residency Program we created as a sustainable living space. Established in response to local needs, the Gate 27 Residency Program is carried out in two different guesthouses, in Istanbul and Ayvalık. While the Istanbul program offers artists more opportunities to interact with different disciplines and the art environment in the city, the Ayvalık program provides an environment of isolation, allowing artists to concentrate on their production. The studio visits, project presentations, panels, exhibition tours, performances and collaborative workspaces planned by Gate 27 for the guests add depth to the creative process and support the artists’ production and visibility of their process.
