Gabriela Albergaria’s artistic world revolves around nature that has been tampered with. Through photography, drawing, and sculpture, the artist explores gardens – not as pristine landscapes, but as meticulously planned and documented spaces. These gardens are seen as constructed realities, designed to reflect specific beliefs about the natural world. They’re also places for leisure, study, and social interaction, shaping our historical understanding of knowledge and pleasure.
Ultimately, the artist uses images of gardens and plants to explore how cultural shifts influence our perception of nature. These mediated representations create different versions of “landscape” through a complex interplay of physical elements, visual arrangements, and cultural assumptions that define how we see the world around us.
During her stay at Gate 27, the artist will research Istanbul’s natural and artificial gardens and flora.
