Esin Aykanat Avcı was born in 1986 in Ankara. She graduated from Hacettepe University, Department of American Culture and Literature in 2009. After her graduation, she had the opportunity to work in a ceramic studio during a three-month volunteer work camp in France. During this period, she combined her interest in and attachment to clay with her interest in fine arts. Following her return to Turkey in 2010, she was accepted to the Hacettepe University Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Ceramics, Master’s program. She completed her dissertation research with an Erasmus Scholarship at the UWIC Cardiff School of Art and Design, Wales, and graduated in 2013. In 2014, she started the Proficiency in Art Program in the Hacettepe University Ceramics Department.
During the 2017-2018 Academic Year, she carried out her dissertation studies in Newark, Delaware, USA as part of the Fulbright Doctoral Dissertation Scholarship. The artist, who opened her first solo show at Gallery Siyah Beyaz, Ankara in 2019, continues to take part in national and international exhibitions with her works produced as process-oriented installations, sculpture, video, land art and bio art, which are based on the interaction between humans and nature and the possibility of being physically reunited. Her works are also included in national art collections. She continues working in her individual studio in Istanbul.
During her process at Gate 27, Aykanat will work on a project that refers to scientific studies focusing on the production of new organs for humans by using leaves and dead plant parts collected from the environment with the aim of giving a new form to the relationship between humans and nature, life and death.
