Line Packer is a traditional boatbuilder who builds, restores, and maintains wooden boats. What drives her daily practice is a technical, craft-based and social understanding of mobility by water—an understanding that extends beyond humans to include all forms of life.
Following an apprenticeship in the Basque Country (Spain, 2021–2024), she collaborated with local boat associations in Spain and Italy. In 2025, she was selected as an emerging artisan for the Homo Faber NextGen Fellowship (Michelangelo Foundation). Through this program, she has the opportunity to work with Conservation Boatbuilders at the Windermere Jetty Museum in the UK (September 2025 – June 2026).
Holding a degree in anthropology from the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland (2018–2021), Packer is particularly invested in documenting naval heritage. She understands boats as living testimonies that carry multiple stories of an era, its people, and their practices. Her work is driven by an interest in how boats can be read through their forms, repairs, and the care and emotional attachments embedded in them. Through rigorous documentation and the preservation of craft, she aims to explore how contemporary knowledge can contribute to acts of memory, while guiding us toward a reflective present that takes responsibility for its environmental and social impact.
