Maja Bekan’s Solo Exhibition is at Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade

Maja Bekan presents a solo exhibition at the Salon of the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade, on view from September 26 – November 10, 2025. For over two decades, Bekan has explored community and collectivity as artistic formats with the potential to inspire social change. Her long-term project P for Performance, initiated in 2008, stages situations and uses performance as a method for investigating collective intimacy and generating new forms of knowledge.

The exhibition is conceived as a series of stage-like settings where Bekan, through video, objects, and text-based installations, shares strategies developed in collaboration with women’s communities worldwide—from women in New York reflecting on connection and intimacy during the Covid-19 pandemic, to women facing social exclusion, to army personnel engaging with gender roles in contexts of conflict. For this iteration, Bekan invites local high school students to collectively read and explore the biographies of historically significant female figures such as Dragica Pravica (1919–1942), WWII partisan and People’s Hero of Yugoslavia.

Bekan’s performances center on working with women of diverse ages, professions, and life experiences, foregrounding notions of self-organization, empowerment, care, solidarity, and the transformative force of intimacy. Her forthcoming monograph Maja Bekan: Constructed Situations will be published by Mousse by the end of 2025.

The exhibition is supported by the Mondriaan Fund and Stroom Den Haag
